Pathfinding for IOT & Wearables

PROJECT:

Intel, Smart Device Innovation, New Devices Group (NDG)
Disclaimer: The majority of work for this project remains under NDA.

ROLE:

UX Designer working with design management, coordinating with user research.

ABOUT:

Ubiquitous technology is transforming our understanding of wellness. Continuous monitoring is changing the way we track and sense our ecosystem. Wearables track user behavior and offer insight into how we live our lives. Can delightful products and experience improve wellbeing? At Smart Device Innovation group we were privileged to explore nascent technologies and design for their implementation in wearables.

At Intel I lead pathfinding on the design of wearables and their impact on users’ lives and behaviors.  I explored across a range of consumer use cases, including health, fertility, product discovery, UV protection, IOT networks, and skin care.

RESEARCH DRIVEN DESIGN APPROACH:

We started by asking questions- not about potential features, but about user behaviors. With a goal of identifying potential user needs for wearable sensors and tracking of biometric data. We also looked closely at the market to discover what products were out there and how they were serving users.

We gathered market research and talked to users. We wondered: What do users want and expect from wearables? How do they currently use health and fitness trackers? How do they feel about wearables? We created robust user studies and went out into the field and talked with users, experts, and super users. Then created hypotheses and identified areas of opportunity. We used prototyping to explore design solutions and to test hypotheses.

IMPACT:

  • Presented findings to internal business partners

  • Presented research and strategy to potential business partners

  • Design innovations that lead to intellectual property

  • Guides for best practices

  • Developed thought leadership around nascent technologies

  • Created IP and patients for Intel IOT and wearables
